In female ‘male pattern’ hair growth (hirsutism), villus hairs are converted into terminal hairs due to hormones, such as insulin and androgens. This process only happens in areas that are sensitive to these hormones, i.e. chin and beard area, upper lip, chest, stomach, and back.
