KSR2 Mutations Are Associated with Obesity, Insulin Resistance, and Impaired Cellular Fuel Oxidation

write about KSR2 mutations

Mutation carriers exhibit hyperphagia in childhood, low heart rate, reduced basal metabolic rate and severe insulin resistance. These data establish KSR2 as an important regulator of energy intake, energy expenditure, and substrate utilization in humans. Modulation of KSR2-mediated effects may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The genetics of obesity: FTO leads the way

write about genetics

The association between FTO SNPs and BMI and the risk of being overweight or obese has been confirmed in multiple populations [6,7,9–27]. The effect of FTO SNPs on BMI is modest, with those individuals homozygous for the risk allele weighing, on average, 3 kg more than those homozygous for the protective allele [7].

Yay! Yay! It’s National Fast Food Day!   Back in the olden days, (1982) I taught Fast Food Operations at the University of Wisconsin – Stout and ran the Edible Express Restaurant. I was so lucky to be paid to work with dietetics and hospitality majors to manage the restaurant and serve healthy lunches to their fellow students in the Home Ec building.

Importance of Cherries in a Low Purine Diet

Cherry juice and tart cherries (the Balaton and Montmorency kind that are grown in Michigan), contain potassium, an essential mineral necessary for optimal kidney functioning and regulating blood pressure. Because potassium is “essential”, this indicates that the body is incapable of chemically altering other substances to create potassium. Therefore, humans must then obtain potassium from other sources, such as cherries, to maintain good health.

Tart cherries and cherry juice keep urine pH at a slightly alkaline level, which inhibits accumulation of uric acid in the blood and consequential formation of uric acid crystals in joints. Cherries should definitely be a part of a low purine diet.

In addition, drinking cherry juice for gout reduces uric acid levels due to the presence of anthocyanins in the cherries. Extracted from berries and grapes, anthocyanin is an antioxidant and bioflavonoid that contains antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties enhancing blood vessel and platelet functioning.

Gout sufferers should eat eight ounces or more of tart cherries each day to relieve pain and swelling of gout. Drinking the same amount of cherry juice instead of eating cherries will also significantly reduce inflammation.

DASH Diet for Oxalate Kidney Stones

write about dash diet

Re: bypass with kidney stones and multiple allergies

I believe excessive protein intake can increase urinary calcium excretion,
thus theoretically increasing the risk of calcium stone formation. Some
interventions I like to use for reducing the risk of stone formation are
lots of fluids, increase fruit, vegetables, moderately low oxalate legumes,
low-fat dairy (there was one trial showing DASH style diet reduced calcium
oxalate supersaturation better than a low oxalate diet), reduce sodium
intake if excessive, reduce protein intake if excessive, take calcium
citrate with meals (especially meals high in oxalate), incorporate
probiotic foods, swap high oxalate foods with similarly healthy lower
oxalate foods. Make sure total calcium intake at least meets current ASMBS
guidelines, but is not above the UL.
